Plastic Surgery of the Eye (Botox) Blepharoplasty

Your eyes are one of the first features people notice. Unfortunately, they’re also one of the first to show signs of aging. Over time, your eyelids may thin and lose elasticity, causing them to sag. This can also be an inherited trait that shows up early in life. In either situation you may benefit from a commonly used procedure that can remove excess tissue from your upper and lower eyelids.

Before Blepharoplasty Blepharoplasty - After

Blepharoplasty is one of the most satisfying facial cosmetic procedures because it usually has long-lasting results and your recovery is very likely to be brief.

Excess skin is removed from the eyelids to maintain the natural shape of the eyes and to restore a more youthful appearance to your face. In addition to the aesthetic benefits, blepharoplasty can correct a condition in which sagging skin obscures vision, which may be covered by your health insurance. If you are considering blepharoplasty, keep in mind the effects of aging will continue, so you may want to repeat blepharoplasty in the future. The surgeons at Eye Surgical Associates will be happy to discuss blepharoplasty along with eyebrow lift surgery to restore a more youthful and comfortable appearance.

Initial cosmetic consultations are provided free. If the blepharoplasty is for medical reasons, the evaluation will be billed to your health insurance.

BOTOX Injections
Cosmetic and Treatment

BOTOX Cosmetic became FDA approved in 2002 as treatment for the temporary reduction of moderate to severe frown lines between eyebrows for those 18 to 65 years of age. With only one minute, and a few tiny injections, noticeable improvements occur within days. There’s no recovery or downtime, and results may last up to four months. The cosmetic results can be “fine tuned” with further treatments.

Before Botox After Botox

What causes frown lines between the brows?
The lines that appear between your brows actually result from muscle movement and the passage of time. As skin becomes less elastic over time, repeated frowning can result in moderate to severe lines between your brows. BOTOX Cosmetic works by blocking nerve impulses, which reduces the contraction of those muscles. With less movement, the skin surface gradually smoothes out, and the moderate to severe lines between your brows begin to fade. Depending on when you start the treatments, these lines may never form.

What is BOTOX?
BOTOX Cosmetic (Botulinum Toxin Type A) is a natural, purified protein produced by the Clostridium Botulinum Bacterium. It is a non-surgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily reduce moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in patients 18-65 years of age. Before treatment the area is anesthetized with a topical anesthetic. During treatment, very low doses of BOTOX Cosmetic are administered via a few tiny injections directly into the muscles that cause those stubborn lines to form between the brows.
BOTOX Cosmetic is the only treatment of its type approved by the FDA for this use. The treatment is minimally invasive and non-surgical. It requires no recovery time and causes little discomfort.

What kind of results can I expect?
You can expect to see results within days after your treatment. The appearance of the area between your brows may continue to improve for up to a week. Visible results can last up to four months. After that, you may be ready to return for a follow-up treatment. If you decide not to continue with BOTOX Cosmetic, the area between your brows will eventually go back to its pretreatment appearance. Your own results may vary. Talk to your physician about what you can expect as well as contraindications and possible side effects.

BOTOX injection treatments are also successfully used to treat blepharospasm and strabismus. These conditions involve spasms of involuntary muscle contractions. Those muscles cannot scrunch up for a period of time after the injection because they are paralyzed. The wrinkles in those areas often referred to as “crow’s feet” temporarily go away.

Daniel D. Brownstone, M.D., of Eye Surgical Associates, has been using BOTOX to treat these problems since 1992. As a result, he has more experience with BOTOX than any other physician in the area. He is also the author of a paper on BOTOX treatments in a respected, peer-reviewed journal.
