Can I Get LASIK?

Most likely, yes! About 98 percent of people with glasses or contacts qualify for LASIK eye surgery. LASIK can correct most cases of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, in any combination.

LASIK surgery requirements :

  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • You must be in good general health.
  • You must have a stable vision prescription (no big changes in the past year).

Alternatives to LASIK

If you are among the few who do not qualify for LASIK surgery, you do have other options:

  • Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA)
ASA also uses a laser to reshape the cornea, but it does not involve the creation of a corneal flap. The procedure requires less instrumentation but a longer healing process.

  • Refractive Lensectomy
While LASIK and ASA correct vision by reshaping the cornea, refractive lensectomy corrects vision by replacing the eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) implant. This surgery uses the same successful techniques of modern cataract surgery and is ideal for patients who have severe near- or farsightedness. People who have refractive lensectomy will never need to have cataract surgery.

  • Phakic IOL
The Phakic intraocular lens (IOL) procedure is similar to refractive lensectomy, except the artificial lens is placed inside the eye without removing the natural lens. Phakic IOLs, also known as implantable contact lenses, are ideal for patients who have severe near- or farsightedness.

  • Eyeglasses and Contacts
These options can be expensive and require a lifetime of care. Contacts are particularly time-consuming because of the risk of infection if they are not cleaned properly. Both eyeglasses and contacts can complicate and interfere with activities such as driving, swimming and other sports.
